The AI Productivity Conundrum: Separating Hype from Reality

As a modelling engineer in a semiconductor manufacturing company, I’ve been skeptical about the role of AI in enhancing job productivity. Despite the hype surrounding AI, I’ve yet to see it make a significant impact in my field. The modelling software I use doesn’t utilize AI, and my experience with AI-powered tools like chatbots and Co-Pilot has been underwhelming.

For instance, I’ve found that AI-powered meeting note-takers are ineffective at summarizing meeting minutes, and I struggle to see how AI can replace the technical aspects of my job. While I acknowledge that AI may eventually take over non-technical tasks like creating meeting minutes and PowerPoint presentations, I believe it still has a long way to go in terms of getting the basics right.

One potential use case for AI that I can see is in generating code based on project requirements, which could potentially impact the jobs of entry-level coders. However, this is just a small fraction of the economy, and I’m not convinced that AI is ready to revolutionize the workforce just yet.

So, can AI really help with job productivity? While it’s possible that AI may enhance certain aspects of our work, I remain skeptical about its ability to make a significant difference in the near future.
