Google Chrome may be secretly consuming a significant amount of your computer storage due to a large on-device AI model file. This file, named weights.bin, can take up to 4GB of space and is being automatically downloaded to the browser’s system folders when certain AI features are enabled.
The weights.bin file is connected to Google’s Gemini Nano AI model, which powers various Chrome AI tools such as scam detection, writing assistance, autofill, and suggestion features. As a result, users who have noticed unexplained drops in their available desktop device storage are now discovering that Chrome is installing this large file inside their browser directory.
This issue raises concerns about the impact of AI-powered features on device storage and the need for transparency in how browsers manage user space.
