AI Chatbots Leak Personal Phone Numbers, Raising Alarms Over Data Privacy

Recent reports have surfaced about AI chatbots, including Google’s generative AI, inadvertently exposing people’s real phone numbers. This has led to a surge in unwanted calls and messages for affected individuals.

A user on Reddit shared their experience, stating that their phone was flooded with calls from strangers seeking various services, all misdirected by Google’s AI. Similarly, a software developer in Israel received unexpected contact on WhatsApp after Google’s chatbot provided incorrect customer service instructions that included their phone number.

According to experts, these privacy breaches are likely caused by the use of personally identifiable information (PII) in the chatbots’ training data. However, the exact reason behind the appearance of real phone numbers in AI-generated responses remains unclear.

Despite the uncertainty, the consequences are a significant concern for individuals whose phone numbers are exposed. Moreover, it appears that there is little that can be done to prevent it. Companies like DeleteMe, which specializes in removing personal information from the internet, have seen a 400% increase in AI-related privacy requests over the past seven months.

These requests often mention popular generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, with customers expressing concerns about their personal information being surfaced by these chatbots. The issue highlights the need for greater awareness and action to protect personal privacy in the face of emerging AI technologies.
