Software engineering is on the cusp of a revolution with the emergence of agentic AI, which promises to transform the way software is developed, delivered, and managed. Following the open source movement and the adoption of DevOps and agile methodologies, agentic AI is poised to be the next seismic shift in the industry.
Agentic AI enables AI agents to become self-directing entities that can manage entire software projects, from development to delivery, with minimal human intervention. According to a recent report based on a survey of 300 engineering and technology executives, software engineering teams are beginning to adopt agentic AI, but its full potential has yet to be realized.
The report highlights key findings, including the growing adoption momentum, with over four-fifths of organizations planning to make agentic AI a leading investment in the next two years. While early gains are expected to be incremental, with most teams anticipating slight or moderate improvements, around one-third of respondents have higher expectations, with 9% believing the improvements will be game-changing.
The primary benefit of agentic AI is expected to be accelerated time-to-market, with 98% of respondents anticipating faster delivery of software projects from pilot to production, with an average increase in speed of 37%. The ultimate goal for most teams is to achieve full agentic lifecycle management, with AI agents managing the product development and software development lifecycles end to end.
