Google is facing skepticism over its claims regarding the environmental impact of its Gemini AI assistant. A recent Google study suggests that generating a single text prompt with Gemini consumes a mere five drops of water (0.26 milliliters) and a tiny 0.24 watt-hours of electricity, leading to 0.03 grams of carbon dioxide emissions. However, experts are questioning the accuracy of these figures, suggesting they may underestimate the actual water and energy footprint compared to previous research regarding the environmental impact of data centers.
