A new report alleges the US government is requiring Nvidia and AMD to remit 15% of their AI chip sales revenue generated in China. The agreement, purportedly initiated under the Trump administration, could yield an estimated $2 billion per year. This follows previous US restrictions on AI chip exports to China, which were later eased allowing both companies to ship modified versions of their products, such as Nvidia’s H20 and AMD’s MI308, under license. This demand echoes prior instances of unusual financial interventions by the Trump administration, including tariffs and direct business involvement. Concerns regarding potential security vulnerabilities in Nvidia’s H20 chips were also previously voiced.
