Drone giant DJI is entering the home cleaning market with the Romo, a robot vacuum that leverages the company’s expertise in aerial navigation. The Romo sets itself apart with advanced obstacle avoidance systems borrowed from DJI’s drone technology. Equipped with binocular fisheye vision and wide-angle laser sensors, the Romo creates a detailed map of its surroundings, using a machine learning perception algorithm to intelligently navigate and clean. This allows it to skillfully avoid common household hazards like cables and even adapt its cleaning behavior based on the objects it identifies – for example, slowing down near spills.
Beyond navigation, the Romo packs a powerful punch with 25,000Pa of suction, anti-tangle brushes, and spinning mop pads for comprehensive cleaning. Users can interact with the Romo through voice commands and customize cleaning areas via a dedicated app. Interestingly, the Romo can also function as a remote-controlled security camera, adding an extra layer of functionality. Initially available in China, the Romo’s transparent housing options allow users to peek at its inner workings, showcasing the technology that drives this innovative cleaning solution.
