Waymo is significantly increasing its autonomous vehicle service area in California, bringing its robotaxi service to more residents of San Francisco and Los Angeles. Beginning June 17th, the service will extend south of San Francisco, followed by an expansion into new Los Angeles neighborhoods on June 18th. This expansion pushes Waymo’s total California service area to an impressive 250 square miles. The company recently celebrated a major milestone, reaching 10 million paid rides, and currently provides approximately 250,000 rides per week across its four operating markets. In California, Waymo operates through its dedicated app and also collaborates with Uber in Austin, Texas. Looking ahead, Waymo plans to more than double its vehicle fleet by 2026 to meet growing demand. While Waymo continues to expand its capabilities, highway driving and airport transportation remain areas under active testing and development.
