Sam Altman’s Worldcoin, a cryptocurrency project centered on iris scanning technology, has officially launched in the United States. The project aims to provide users with digital identities tied to their unique iris patterns, recorded using specialized ‘World Orb’ devices. In exchange for undergoing an iris scan, new users will receive 16 WLD tokens. Existing US users already registered will receive a ‘pioneer grant’ of 150 WLD tokens deposited into their wallets.

Worldcoin (WLD) is now accessible via exchanges like Coinbase. Tools for Humanity, the company spearheading the project, also announced a partnership with Visa to create a debit card. This card will allow users to seamlessly convert their WLD tokens into traditional fiat currency during transactions.

Altman and CEO Alex Blania unveiled the US launch at an event in San Francisco. To facilitate the iris scanning process, over 7,000 World Orbs will be deployed in ‘World Space’ locations across major cities, including Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, and San Francisco. Select Razer stores will also host the devices.
