Wikipedia is enhancing its editing process with generative AI tools, aiming to boost the efficiency and quality of its vast online encyclopedia. The Wikimedia Foundation’s new initiative focuses on supporting its community of volunteer moderators, editors, and patrollers by automating time-consuming tasks like background research, translation, and new user onboarding. This will allow human editors to concentrate on content deliberation and nuanced decision-making.

Chris Albon, Director of Machine Learning at the Wikimedia Foundation, highlighted the goal of removing technical obstacles and tedious chores. The foundation stresses a ‘human-centered approach’ to AI integration, emphasizing human control, open-source development, transparency, and comprehensive multilingual support. While Wikipedia already uses AI for detecting vandalism, this deeper integration represents a significant step toward empowering its editors and improving the overall quality and accessibility of the platform.
