US Agencies Prioritize Ethical AI and Scalable ML Deployments

The Department of Energy (DOE) and the General Services Administration (GSA) are prioritizing responsible AI development and practical machine learning (ML) strategies. Speakers at AI World Government in Alexandria, VA, emphasized the need for trustworthy AI and scalable AI adoption across federal agencies.

Pamela Isom, Director of the AI and Technology Office at the DOE, emphasized a strategic portfolio approach to AI projects with robust risk mitigation policies. Her office aims to transform the DOE into a world-leading AI enterprise through accelerated research, development, and adoption of applied AI and data science. Isom highlighted the AI Risk Management Playbook, a DOE resource designed to guide ethical AI development.

Anil Chaudhry, Director of Federal AI Implementations at the GSA’s AI Center of Excellence (CoE), shared best practices for implementing AI at scale. The CoE is tasked with accelerating tech modernization across the government. Chaudhry stressed the importance of evaluating industry partners’ experience with large datasets, financial capital, logistical capital, and physical infrastructure. He also emphasized the need for a well-trained workforce to handle AI tools and techniques and how these companies deploy bots in Robotic Process Automation environments.

Both Isom and Chaudhry referenced Executive Orders 14028 (cybersecurity) and 13960 (trustworthy AI), highlighting the importance of aligning AI innovation with responsible governance within the public sector.
