The UK tech sector, a hub for artificial intelligence innovation, is hindered by a manual and inefficient sponsor licence management process. Despite advancements in automation, companies relying on international AI talent are stuck with a labor-intensive compliance function.
This paradox has significant consequences, affecting both employers and skilled workers. The root of the issue lies in the Home Office Sponsor Management System’s lack of API integration, resulting in compliance data being stored in unstructured formats like PDFs.
Material changes to sponsored workers’ circumstances require human judgment, making it challenging for machines to flag reporting obligations. As a result, tech companies are forced to manage sponsor compliance manually, leading to inconsistencies and errors.
This operational risk affects a substantial portion of the workforce, with 30% to 40% of Skilled Worker visa holders being impacted. The numbers are alarming, with 1,948 sponsor licences revoked in the UK between July 2024 and June 2025, more than double the previous year.
The tech sector is disproportionately represented in these revocations, highlighting the need for a more efficient and automated sponsor licence management system to support the industry’s growth and talent acquisition.
