A coalition of UK artists, musicians, and media organizations, including notable figures like Paul McCartney and Dua Lipa, are lobbying for greater transparency in AI training data. They are backing an amendment to the UK’s Data (Use and Access) Bill, championed by Beeban Kidron, that would mandate AI companies to reveal the copyrighted materials used to develop their models.

The amendment recently passed the House of Lords and has been sent back to the House of Commons for further debate. Proponents argue that increased transparency will stimulate a fair licensing market and solidify the UK’s role in the global AI ecosystem. An open letter signed by hundreds of creatives warns that failing to implement such measures risks handing control to large, foreign tech companies and harming the UK’s creative economy. This comes amidst accusations against companies like OpenAI and Meta, alleging unauthorized use of copyrighted content for AI model training, a story originally reported by The Verge.
