A recent overhaul of Trae IDE’s pricing model has left users facing unexpected and significant expenses. The shift to a token-based system has transformed a once-valuable tool into a potential financial burden, with even moderate use resulting in substantial costs.
Previously, the Pro plan offered 600 fast requests and unlimited slow requests for $10/month. In contrast, the new token-based system charges for every request, leading to rapid cost accumulation. One user reported spending $38 in a single day on just 127 requests, exceeding their monthly $20 Basic allowance.
The situation is further complicated by the reclassification of many requests as ‘fast’, incurring additional costs, whereas they would have been considered ‘slow’ and free under the previous system. This change has sparked frustration and concerns about being pushed towards more expensive cloud models.
To mitigate these issues, users are advised to optimize their usage by leveraging affordable models, frequently resetting contexts, and avoiding unnecessary use of agents and SOLO for casual tasks. Furthermore, users are encouraged to voice their concerns and demand better local support on Trae’s GitHub issues to prevent the tool from becoming an unaffordable burden.
Have you experienced similar issues with Trae IDE’s new pricing model? Are there alternative local IDE options that you would recommend for those seeking more cost-effective solutions?
