Tesla has been ordered to pay over $200 million in damages following a Florida jury’s verdict finding the company partially liable for a fatal 2019 crash involving its Autopilot system. The ruling marks a significant legal challenge for Tesla regarding its driver-assist technology, which has been under intense regulatory and public scrutiny due to its alleged role in numerous accidents. The lawsuit centered on the death of Naibel Benavides, with the plaintiffs arguing that Autopilot was a key factor in the accident. Driver George McGee testified he relied on Autopilot, believing it would prevent crashes even in the event of driver error. Tesla intends to appeal the verdict, arguing that it “will set back automotive safety.” The verdict arrives as Tesla initiates testing of its robotaxi service in limited areas, adding further complexity to the company’s autonomous driving efforts.
