Tencent has introduced Hunyuan3D-PolyGen, a new AI model poised to transform 3D asset creation within the game development industry. The model aims to provide ‘art-grade’ 3D assets, directly tackling a significant hurdle in the creation of video games.
Hunyuan3D-PolyGen uses BPT technology to efficiently compress and generate high-quality 3D models comprising tens of thousands of polygons. Its system supports both triangular and quadrilateral faces, improving interoperability across various software platforms. Tencent reports internal efficiency improvements exceeding 70% in their own game development workflows.
The model operates in a three-stage process: first, converting 3D meshes into a language processable by AI; second, generating new mesh instructions via Natural Language Processing (NLP); and finally, translating these instructions back into usable 3D meshes. The AI is trained using a reinforcement learning system to identify high-quality results, minimizing the production of unusable assets.
This technology holds the potential to democratize the creation of high-quality assets, potentially leveling the playing field between smaller and larger game development studios. The tool is designed to augment, rather than replace, human artists, empowering them to concentrate on higher-level conceptual design and creative tasks.
