A new analysis of Reddit conversations suggests many users are disappointed with GPT-5, citing concerns about performance and unexpected changes. The study, encompassing over 10,000 posts from the model’s launch week, found a prevailing sentiment of frustration across major AI-focused subreddits. Users are reporting perceived downgrades compared to models like GPT-4o, specifically highlighting the removal of model choices, limitations in creative writing, reduced context window sizes, and more restrictive usage policies. The analysis also points to a decline in user trust, fueled by perceived communication failures from OpenAI regarding undocumented alterations to the model’s functionalities. Despite the criticism, some users acknowledged improvements in GPT-5, including a lower tendency to hallucinate, enhanced reasoning abilities, improved code generation capabilities, and increased cost-effectiveness.
