Pinterest is implementing new measures to help users identify and manage AI-generated content on the platform. These features include automatic labeling of images detected as created or edited using generative AI and the ability to filter out such content while browsing. According to Chief Technology Officer Matt Madrigal, the goal is to empower users to make informed choices about the content they see. The “AI modified” label will appear in the bottom left-hand corner of a pin when clicked, indicating AI involvement. Pinterest analyzes image metadata for markers like Google’s SynthID or Adobe’s Content Credentials, alongside using their own “classifiers” to detect AI content. Users can appeal mislabeled pins. An experimental “see fewer” option will also be available for categories like beauty and art, allowing users to reduce the amount of AI-generated content they are shown. This is a response to user criticism about AI images dominating Pinterest, hindering its usability for practical purposes like finding real-world reference materials. The realistic but often unattainable nature of AI-generated content, from hairstyles to furniture, has also been a concern.
