Search startup Perplexity AI has signaled its interest in acquiring Google’s Chrome browser if regulators force a divestiture due to antitrust concerns. The expression of interest came during testimony in the Justice Department’s case alleging Google maintains an illegal monopoly in search. Perplexity’s Chief Business Officer, Dmitry Shevelenko, stated the company could manage and maintain Chrome at its current scale without compromising user experience or introducing fees, should Judge Amit Mehta order its separation from Google. Google has argued that forcing a Chrome spin-off would destabilize the browser ecosystem, potentially leading to Chromium monetization or quality decline. However, Perplexity believes its capabilities are up to the task. Shevelenko stated, “I think we could do it.” This interest underscores Perplexity’s ambition and willingness to navigate complex regulatory issues, positioning itself as a potential player in the shifting tech landscape.
