Perplexity has launched its AI-powered voice assistant on iOS, offering a new alternative to Siri for iPhone and iPad users. The update brings features like email drafting, reminder creation, and restaurant reservation assistance directly within the Perplexity app, even when users navigate away. While currently lacking screen sharing found on Android, the Perplexity assistant aims to bridge the gap, particularly as the release of Apple Intelligence features may be delayed.
One key advantage is compatibility with older iOS devices, expanding access to AI-powered functionality that might not be available on devices lacking the hardware requirements for Apple Intelligence. Perplexity’s assistant leverages web browsing and multi-app actions to streamline common tasks. The company previously indicated that this iOS launch was dependent on securing necessary permissions from Apple.
Early testing indicates smooth integration with iOS permissions. The app seamlessly requests access to reminders and contacts as needed. While it can initiate actions within other apps, like opening OpenTable with pre-filled reservation details or setting up an Uber ride, users must still finalize the process within the respective applications.
Though lacking advanced features such as camera-based visual input (available in competitors like ChatGPT and Grok) and system alarm functionality (still handled by Siri), the Perplexity AI Assistant provides a functional and accessible AI voice assistant experience for a broad range of iOS users.
