OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has hinted at the possibility of future advertising within ChatGPT’s new personalization feature, Pulse. While emphasizing that there are no immediate plans, Altman didn’t dismiss the idea of introducing ads further down the line. ChatGPT Pulse is a daily update feature that learns about individual users by analyzing their past conversations and connected applications, tailoring the information provided. Currently, due to its significant computational demands, Pulse is exclusively available to ChatGPT Pro subscribers.

Altman drew a comparison to the relevant advertising found on Instagram, suggesting a potential avenue for monetization that prioritizes user experience. He explained that the original plan was a wider rollout of Pulse, but the intense processing requirements necessitated limiting it to Pro users initially. “To the degree we can find out cool things to do that actually seem helpful to users … maybe there’s something to do there, but as has been clear, we approach ads with great caution,” Altman stated, underscoring a cautious approach to integrating advertising into the platform.
