Facing increasing operational costs and competitive pressure, OpenAI is reportedly considering introducing advertisements into ChatGPT. Nick Turley, the head of ChatGPT, acknowledged the possibility in a recent interview, emphasizing the need for a thoughtful and non-intrusive implementation. While highlighting the continued success and growth potential of ChatGPT’s subscription model, Turley conceded the necessity for exploring alternative revenue streams.
Beyond traditional advertising, OpenAI is also experimenting with ‘Commerce in ChatGPT,’ a program that could see the company taking a percentage of sales generated through ChatGPT’s product recommendations. Turley stressed the importance of maintaining objectivity in these recommendations, ensuring affiliate relationships don’t compromise the integrity of ChatGPT’s responses. This potential move aligns with competitor xAI’s plans to incorporate advertisements into its Grok AI model, signaling a potential shift in the AI landscape towards monetization through advertising.
