OpenAI has halted the generation of AI videos depicting Martin Luther King Jr. on its Sora platform following criticism regarding the disrespectful nature of some created content. The decision follows objections from the King estate, including Dr. King’s daughter, Bernice King, who requested a stop to the AI-generated likenesses. OpenAI is now extending an opt-out option to representatives or estates of other historical figures who wish to prevent the use of their likeness on the platform. This move marks a change in OpenAI’s policy, reminiscent of their earlier reversal regarding copyright after facing a flood of character depictions, notably Pikachu. OpenAI stated on X that they have been working with King, Inc. to address how Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s likeness is represented in Sora generations.
