Major League Baseball is set to revolutionize the game with the introduction of automated ball-strike (ABS) systems, commonly known as “robot umpires,” at home plate beginning in the 2026 season. The decision follows years of rigorous testing in minor league contests, spring training exhibitions, and special events like the 2025 All-Star Game. The ABS technology employs a network of 12 Hawk-Eye cameras and T-Mobile’s 5G network to precisely track the trajectory of each pitch and determine whether it lands within the strike zone. Importantly, MLB will be implementing a challenge system rather than a fully automated one. Each team will be granted two challenges per game to contest an umpire’s call, with the resolution process taking approximately 15 seconds. To ensure accuracy, MLB will also be certifying each player’s official height to precisely define the strike zone. Commissioner Rob Manfred noted that the challenge format received stronger support from players compared to a completely automated system.
