Meta is advancing its augmented reality (AR) ambitions with the unveiling of Aria Gen 2, the next generation of its research-focused smart glasses. This experimental platform is designed to propel advancements in AI and robotics. Building upon the foundation laid by the original 2020 model, Aria Gen 2 boasts significantly enhanced eye-tracking capabilities, now capable of discerning gaze direction for each individual eye and even detecting blinks. The glasses are equipped with four computer vision cameras that facilitate precise 3D hand and object tracking. Health and audio improvements include a photoplethysmography sensor for heart rate estimation and a contact microphone optimized for clear audio capture in noisy environments. Weighing approximately 75 grams and featuring foldable arms, Aria Gen 2 is poised to become a valuable tool for researchers. Meta intends to begin accepting applications from researchers later this year, leveraging the learnings from its Ray-Ban smart glasses collaboration. These advancements are crucial steps toward the development of Orion, Meta’s ambitious augmented reality glasses project. Furthermore, the company is continuing its partnership with Oakley and is actively developing a high-end pair of glasses codenamed “Hypernova,” which will feature an integrated display screen.
