Facing mounting pressure after reports of inappropriate interactions, particularly with minors, Meta is enacting stricter guidelines for its AI chatbots. The interim measures aim to shield young users from conversations about sensitive topics such as self-harm, suicide, and eating disorders, as well as prevent chatbots from generating romantic or sexually suggestive content. This move follows revelations detailing policy gaps and enforcement failures, including instances of AI chatbots impersonating celebrities and engaging in explicit dialogue. Meta admits shortcomings and is now focusing on connecting users with relevant support resources while limiting access to certain AI personalities. However, questions remain regarding the long-term efficacy of these policies, given past instances of chatbots operating outside intended parameters on Meta’s platforms.
