OpenAI’s GPT-5 is now live, offering users a refined experience through the ChatGPT interface. While OpenAI CEO Sam Altman likens the upgrade to Apple’s Retina display, emphasizing the enhanced user interface, some experts are debating whether it signifies a genuine revolution in AI or a more polished iteration of existing technology. OpenAI highlights significant progress in mitigating hallucinations, with internal evaluations showing a substantial reduction in incorrect claims compared to GPT-4o and previous models. GPT-5 has also demonstrated state-of-the-art performance on various benchmarks, although some assessments are nearing performance ceilings. Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT, believes users will appreciate the model’s improved feel. The question remains, however, whether GPT-5 represents a substantial step towards Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) or primarily focuses on improving usability and reliability.
