Google is leveraging the power of artificial intelligence to revolutionize weather forecasting with its new WeatherNext 2 model. This advanced AI system, now integrated into Google Search, Gemini, and Pixel devices, significantly improves both the speed and accuracy of predictions. WeatherNext 2 boasts generating forecasts eight times faster than its predecessor while maintaining an impressive 99.9% accuracy in predicting crucial weather variables such as temperature and wind.
Based on a Functional Generative Network (FGN), WeatherNext 2 can generate hundreds of potential weather scenarios in a single step, enabling forecasts up to 15 days in advance. Beyond consumer applications, Google is providing early access to WeatherNext 2 for enterprise clients and making forecast data accessible through platforms like Google Earth Engine and BigQuery. This move highlights the increasing role of AI in enhancing weather prediction, complementing efforts by organizations like the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts and Nvidia.
