Google Search is expanding the capabilities of its AI Mode, now enabling users to upload images directly for interactive learning assistance. This new feature allows students to upload images of homework, diagrams, or other visual materials to receive explanations and insights from the AI.

Initially launched in the US in May, Google’s AI Mode provides summarized search results and conversational AI interactions. The ability to process images, tested since April, is now being rolled out to desktop users. Users can upload images of various subjects, like math problems or botanical specimens, and pose questions directly related to the visual content. Google is also experimenting with real-time camera sharing for mobile users within the AI Mode Labs program.

Beyond image uploads, Google is streamlining access to Lens within Chrome through an ‘Ask Google about this page’ feature. This option generates AI Overviews in the browser’s sidebar related to the page’s content. Further enhancements include upcoming support for PDF uploads in AI Mode and integration with Google Drive. The Canvas workspace, powered by Gemini’s AI, will also be accessible within AI Mode on desktop, facilitating study guide creation and other learning activities.
