Google is intensifying its AI search ambitions by integrating its AI-powered search functionality directly into the main Google Search platform. Launching initially to a select group of US users, the new “AI Mode” will appear as a dedicated tab within the standard Search interface, moving beyond its previous experimental environment in Labs. This represents a significant shift from traditional search, where results are presented as a list of URLs. Instead, AI Mode will provide users with AI-generated summaries and answers derived from Google’s vast search index, a departure from the current AI Overviews which appear alongside traditional results. Placing AI Mode prominently as the first tab underscores its importance. This move positions Google to directly challenge the growing popularity of dedicated AI search engines such as Perplexity AI and ChatGPT, which are designed to leverage real-time web data for more accurate and comprehensive responses. In parallel, Google is eliminating the waitlist for AI Mode testing within Labs for US users, effectively opening access to a broader audience ahead of a wider rollout. Refinements to the AI Mode experience include a search history panel for easy access to previous queries and the ability to ask follow-up questions. The feature also now incorporates visually engaging and interactive cards displaying product and location information, including opening hours, user reviews, pricing details, and shipping options.
