Google is testing a new AI-powered feature called “Audio Overviews” within its search results, allowing users to listen to AI-generated summaries of their queries. The feature, available through the Google Labs program, generates podcast-style discussions directly within the search page.
When a user searches for a topic, a “Generate Audio Overview” button appears, triggering the creation of a brief audio clip. According to Google, these clips usually run around 40 seconds. The audio overview features two AI-generated hosts discussing the search query. Users have standard playback controls, including play, pause, mute, and speed adjustment. Crucially, the feature also provides links to the sources used to compile the audio summary, enhancing transparency and verifiability.
The feature is currently limited to English-language searches within the United States, marking an expansion of Google’s AI audio capabilities following its integration into tools such as NotebookLM and Gemini.
