Google’s Gemini AI is evolving beyond simple answer provision with the introduction of a new “guided learning” mode. Designed to function as a “learning companion,” this feature breaks down complex concepts with step-by-step support, interactive quizzes, images, and videos. Instead of providing immediate solutions, Gemini will engage users with questions and prompts, fostering deeper understanding and knowledge retention. Google emphasized that this mode was developed in collaboration with students, educators, researchers, and learning specialists to ensure its effectiveness is grounded in established learning science principles.

This shift highlights a growing trend among AI developers who are actively working to reposition their tools as valuable educational resources, partly in response to concerns about AI being used for academic dishonesty. Similar to ChatGPT’s study mode, Gemini’s guided learning mode seeks to promote genuine learning experiences. To further support education, Google is offering a free 12-month subscription to its AI Pro Plan for students over 18 in select countries. Additionally, Google is committing $1 billion over the next three years to bolster American education, including initiatives focused on AI literacy, research funding, and cloud computing resources.
