To compete effectively with China’s rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, the European Union must streamline its AI regulations and encourage broader adoption, argues Google. Kent Walker, Google’s President of Global Affairs, stressed that China’s state-backed investments are driving deep AI integration across its economy, far outpacing the EU’s current adoption rates.

Walker cautioned that overly complex and restrictive regulations within the EU are stifling AI innovation and adoption by making it challenging for businesses to operate. He proposed a three-pronged approach: simplifying existing AI regulations, investing in workforce training to bolster AI adoption skills, and scaling infrastructure to foster widespread innovation.

He underscored the importance of targeted regulation that addresses tangible impacts rather than imposing overly granular control over scientific development. Google reaffirmed its commitment to the European market and encouraged businesses to actively participate in shaping the EU’s AI policy agenda.
