Google is leveling up its Gemini AI chatbot by giving it the ability to remember past conversations. This new feature allows Gemini to personalize its responses by recalling details and preferences gleaned from previous interactions, saving users from having to re-explain their interests each time they chat.

Imagine this: you’ve used Gemini to brainstorm YouTube channel ideas focused on Japanese culture. Later, when you’re looking for new video concepts, Gemini might suggest content about trying Japanese food, remembering your prior interest. Google stresses user control, making it easy to enable or disable the ‘Personal Context’ feature within the Gemini app settings.

The update is initially launching on the Gemini 2.5 Pro model in select countries, with plans to expand to other regions and the Gemini 2.5 Flash model. Alongside this enhancement, Google is tweaking its privacy settings, renaming ‘Gemini Apps Activity’ to ‘Keep Activity.’ Starting September 2nd, a sample of file and photo uploads to Gemini may be used to improve Google services. For sensitive topics, users can now engage in temporary chats, which won’t be stored in chat history or used for AI training.
