Meta is taking aim at content theft on Facebook, implementing stricter penalties for creators who repeatedly repost content from other users. Those found to be reusing videos, photos, or text without adding significant original value will face reduced distribution of their posts and potential loss of access to Facebook’s monetization programs. This move mirrors similar efforts by YouTube to combat the proliferation of mass-produced, often AI-generated, content. Facebook’s strategy includes reducing the visibility of duplicate videos and exploring solutions to credit original creators, such as linking viewers directly to the source material. The new policies will be implemented gradually. Meta clarifies that creators who add their own unique commentary or actively participate in viral trends will not be affected by these changes.
