A new proposal seeks to combat the spread of disinformation online by combining the power of artificial intelligence with the wisdom of citizen juries. Modeled after the jury duty system, the approach aims to provide a more robust and democratic defense against coordinated disinformation campaigns than relying solely on AI algorithms, government oversight, or tech platform moderation.
The AI component would be responsible for identifying suspicious activity, such as coordinated posting patterns, network anomalies, and cross-platform coordination indicative of bot networks or organized disinformation efforts. This evidence would then be presented to randomly selected panels of citizens, who would evaluate the information and vote on its authenticity.
Content flagged by the citizen jury would undergo a temporary quarantine, with all decisions and reasoning logged transparently and an appeals process available. This multi-layered system is designed to provide a crucial check on AI-driven decisions, mitigating the risks of false positives and concerns about algorithmic bias or government censorship.
The concept was initially shared on Reddit, where the creator sought feedback on the technical challenges, potential safeguards against errors, and alternative implementation strategies.
