Columbia University is piloting Sway, an AI-powered debate platform, in an effort to foster more constructive dialogue among students on highly sensitive issues. Topics being addressed include abortion, racism, immigration, and the complex Israel-Palestine conflict. Developed at Carnegie Mellon University, Sway connects students with differing viewpoints for structured one-on-one conversations. The goal is to enhance the quality of these interactions and encourage more thoughtful engagement. Carnegie Mellon University researcher Nicholas DiBella reports that approximately 3,000 students across more than 30 colleges and universities have already used the platform. This initiative seeks to leverage AI to improve campus discourse around challenging subjects. The original reporting appeared in The Verge.
