OpenAI has officially rolled out its much-anticipated group chat feature for ChatGPT, enabling collaborative interactions with the AI chatbot for up to 20 users. Following a successful pilot phase, the feature is now globally accessible to all logged-in users across ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro subscriptions. OpenAI envisions this new functionality empowering users to streamline event planning, coordinate travel arrangements, facilitate document drafting, and tackle other collaborative projects.

Creating a group chat is simple: users can initiate one by selecting the “people” icon within the ChatGPT interface. The current chat is then duplicated into the new group, and additional participants can be invited using a shareable link. To personalize their presence within the group, users can customize their profiles with a name, username, and photo.

ChatGPT is designed to integrate seamlessly into group conversations, intelligently determining when to contribute and when to observe silently. Users can directly mention “ChatGPT” to elicit a specific response. The chatbot supports emoji reactions, and responses are personalized with profile photos for a more engaging experience.

Group chat settings provide granular control, allowing administrators to add or remove participants, mute notifications, and provide custom instructions to ChatGPT. It’s important to note that the AI model does *not* retain memories from personal chats, nor does it create new memories based on group interactions. ChatGPT leverages GPT-5.1 Auto to select the most appropriate model for each response, and rate limits are only enforced when the chatbot actively sends a message.
