OpenAI is rolling out a new group chat functionality within ChatGPT, enabling up to 20 users to collaborate directly with the AI chatbot. This update transforms ChatGPT into a platform designed for small-group teamwork, facilitating tasks such as project planning, brainstorming sessions, and preliminary project discussions.
Users can initiate a group chat by selecting the “people” icon and inviting participants using a shareable link. ChatGPT is designed to actively participate in these conversations, offering relevant responses and allowing users to directly engage the AI by mentioning “ChatGPT.” The chatbot also supports emoji reactions and personalized image generation incorporating profile photos.
The group chat feature operates on GPT-5.1 Auto, which dynamically selects the most appropriate response model based on the prompt’s context. OpenAI anticipates that this functionality will improve cross-functional team alignment, accelerate review processes, expedite onboarding, streamline task management, and enhance organized creative feedback.
This introduction of group chats signifies the increasing integration of AI into various organizational workflows. While not intended to replace human interaction, the feature provides a collaborative space for teams to discuss projects with AI assistance, ultimately aiming to streamline communication and boost overall efficiency.
