OpenAI has officially released ChatGPT Atlas, its foray into the burgeoning AI-powered web browser market. Following earlier hints, the browser is currently available for macOS, with versions for Windows, iOS, and Android platforms planned for future release. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed his enthusiasm, calling it ‘a new product I’m quite excited about!’ ChatGPT Atlas is built on Chromium and integrates a ChatGPT interface for seamless AI interaction. A key feature is the integration of OpenAI’s Operator AI agent, designed to automate tasks such as making restaurant reservations and filling out online forms directly within the browser. This launch intensifies the competitive landscape, positioning ChatGPT Atlas against established players like Google’s Gemini integration in Chrome, Perplexity’s Comet AI browser, and Microsoft’s Copilot Mode within Edge. Notably, Microsoft, a key strategic partner of OpenAI, has indicated it will not develop its own independent AI browser.
