AMD has forged a strategic alliance with OpenAI, inking a five-year deal to provide a substantial six gigawatts of processing power to fuel AI data centers. This collaboration marks a significant challenge to Nvidia’s current leading position in the AI accelerator market.

The agreement, detailed in a press release, will see an initial deployment of one gigawatt of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs commencing in the latter half of 2026. AMD anticipates the partnership to generate revenues in the “tens of billions of dollars.”

Notably, this announcement follows OpenAI’s pre-existing “strategic partnership” with Nvidia. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman commented on the AMD deal, stating, “This partnership is a crucial step forward in developing the necessary computing resources to unlock the full potential of AI.”
