The escalating adoption of artificial intelligence is creating a significant surge in energy consumption, primarily driven by the need to power and cool massive data centers. While AI’s current energy footprint may be relatively small, its exponential growth is raising concerns about its potential impact on global electrification efforts and climate change targets.
Despite technological advancements that have reduced the cost of AI computing, the recent leaps in AI model performance are fueling a corresponding increase in electricity demand from data centers. These facilities currently account for approximately 4.4% of total electricity consumption, and forecasts indicate that this could climb to as high as 12% of total US electricity demand by 2028.
Addressing this escalating energy demand requires a comprehensive approach. A modernized electricity grid, powered by clean energy sources and bolstered by robust transmission and distribution networks, is essential. Demand management strategies are also crucial to optimize energy usage. Furthermore, ethical AI development must prioritize climate-safe practices to ensure its growth contributes positively to communities, ecosystems, and the overall economy.
