The construction industry, often plagued by accidents, could see a significant safety boost from emerging generative AI technologies. A novel AI-powered system leverages visual data from construction sites to automatically detect potential OSHA violations and alert safety managers. This system, dubbed ‘Safety AI,’ employs a visual language model (VLM) to analyze images and flag hazards like improper ladder usage with high accuracy. While still in its early stages, the technology offers the promise of a more proactive approach to safety management. Several other companies, including Safeguard AI and Buildots, are also employing AI-based solutions to enhance safety and monitor construction progress, although many rely on more established machine learning methods due to concerns about the reliability of newer generative models. Despite the potential benefits, experts urge caution against relying solely on AI for safety oversight, stressing the crucial role of human verification in maintaining a safe working environment.
