A new study indicates that AI chatbots, despite their growing popularity, haven’t yet made a substantial difference in the workplace. Researchers from the University of Chicago and the University of Copenhagen examined data from Danish surveys and records, encompassing 25,000 individuals across 7,000 workplaces. The findings reveal that increased adoption of AI chatbots hasn’t correlated with significant increases in pay or altered work hours for users. This remained consistent regardless of whether individuals were early adopters or worked in environments actively promoting chatbot usage.

While users acknowledged benefits like enhanced work quality and boosted creativity, time savings were the most notable advantage, averaging only 2.8% of total work time. This falls short of the productivity gains demonstrated in controlled experiments, suggesting the need for additional investments, such as comprehensive training and robust company support, to fully leverage the capabilities of AI chatbots.

Interestingly, the study also points to the emergence of new roles centered around AI integration, ethical considerations, and content creation. This suggests that organizations are still in the initial phases of adapting to this technology. The researchers advise against exaggerating the short-term influence of generative AI on employment, arguing that current realities don’t align with predictions of a widespread transformation.
