OpenAI has introduced GPT-5.1, a refined iteration of its core AI model, aimed at delivering a more intelligent and engaging ChatGPT interaction. This update features two key variants: GPT-5.1 Instant, engineered for improved instruction following and a more personable demeanor, and GPT-5.1 Thinking, optimized for quicker responses on routine tasks while maintaining focus on complex challenges. The rollout to ChatGPT users is scheduled to commence this week.
In a move to personalize the user experience, OpenAI is expanding its range of personality presets. Users can now choose from options like Professional, Friendly, Candid, Quirky, Efficient, Nerdy, and Cynical, enabling them to customize the conversational style of ChatGPT. Furthermore, a select group of users will participate in an experimental feature allowing direct fine-tuning of ChatGPT’s stylistic attributes through settings.
The release of GPT-5.1 comes after varying user feedback on the initial GPT-5 launch, with some expressing reservations about the scope of the enhancements. Microsoft, a significant partner of OpenAI, has also been evaluating alternative AI models from companies like Anthropic.
This announcement is concurrent with the recent unveiling of ChatGPT Atlas, OpenAI’s AI-powered web browser, which incorporates an “agent mode” for Plus and Pro subscribers.
