This push towards personally owned autonomous vehicles is driven by declining technology costs, though market viability is still uncertain as demonstrated by unprofitable competitors like Waymo. This announcement arrives amidst the expiration of EV tax credits. In addition to individual sales, Lucid intends to sell thousands of vehicles to Uber for integration into a robotaxi service, with the first deployment anticipated in 2026.
