OpenAI has finalized its transition to a for-profit public benefit corporation, OpenAI Group PBC, with the original nonprofit now operating as the OpenAI Foundation. This restructuring coincides with a new agreement with Microsoft addressing consumer hardware ambitions and, critically, the development and control of artificial general intelligence (AGI). While Microsoft appears to have reduced its ownership percentage, the agreement clarifies intellectual property rights concerning AGI, potentially allowing Microsoft to pursue AGI independently or in partnership with other entities. The restructuring follows discussions with state attorneys general and a legal dispute with Elon Musk. A key point of contention has been control over the core technology, particularly regarding AGI. The completion of this complex restructuring paves the way for a substantial investment from SoftBank.
