Elon Musk’s xAI has unveiled Grokipedia, a new online encyclopedia positioned as a potential competitor to Wikipedia. Despite Musk’s initial claim of “massive improvement,” early analysis reveals strong parallels between the two platforms. Much of Grokipedia’s content appears to be derived from Wikipedia, utilizing the Creative Commons license under which Wikipedia’s articles are published. Some entries are even near-verbatim copies of their Wikipedia counterparts.

The Wikimedia Foundation has confirmed that Grokipedia leverages Wikipedia’s extensive knowledge base, underscoring the vital role of human-generated content in the advancement of AI. While Grokipedia contains some original material, it also differentiates itself by offering alternative perspectives on certain subjects. For instance, while Wikipedia highlights the scientific consensus regarding human-caused climate change, Grokipedia includes differing viewpoints on the issue. Currently in version 0.1, Grokipedia reportedly features over 885,000 articles.
