AMD is joining forces with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in a $1 billion collaboration to construct two cutting-edge supercomputers, dubbed Lux and Discovery. Oracle and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) are also key partners in this initiative. Both supercomputers will be located at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Lux is slated to come online in early 2026, followed by Discovery in 2029.
Lux is envisioned as an “AI Factory,” optimized for training and deploying artificial intelligence foundation models, thereby accelerating breakthroughs in scientific research. Discovery will prioritize enhancing performance and energy efficiency, facilitating research across diverse fields including energy, biology, advanced materials, national security, and manufacturing innovation. This includes assisting in the design of next-generation reactors, batteries, and semiconductors.
