Microsoft is doubling down on the AI assistant concept with the introduction of Mico, a next-generation virtual character integrated into Copilot’s voice mode. Designed to be more engaging than its infamous predecessor, Clippy, Mico offers real-time facial expressions that react to user conversations. According to Jacob Andreou, Corporate VP of Product and Growth at Microsoft AI, Mico aims to foster a deeper connection by responding empathetically to the nuances of speech. The character’s presence is enabled by default in Copilot’s voice interface. Mico leverages a new memory feature within Copilot to retain and recall information about the user and their projects, providing a more personalized experience. Furthermore, a ‘Learn Live’ mode transforms Mico into a Socratic tutor, guiding users through concepts rather than simply providing answers. This launch represents a significant push from Microsoft to encourage users to interact with AI assistants through more natural conversational interfaces. Mico also includes Easter eggs, signaling Microsoft’s commitment to making AI interaction more enjoyable and accessible.
